Meet the Team

Tri-1st prides itself on being able to offer advice of the highest quality to its customers. Over the years we have put together a vastly knowledgeable team that we're sure would be able to answer any of your questions. Why not test them out! They have competed from sprint to Ironman distance triathlons to a very high standard. They also have a number of different coaching qualifications.

The one thing they all have in common though is that no matter where they are now they all had to start somewhere. Triathlon can seem a very daunting and some say elitist sport but we all understand and can relate to someone who is just starting out. Hey even we still get nervous and worried at times and need advise! We aren't perfect but we will do our best to help. So no matter how silly you may feel the question is, just ask one of our team:

Damion "Damo" Littlewood – Owner and Level 3 Tri coach

Originally from New Zealand, Damo started out in triathlon 12 years ago. Since then he has competed in just about every triathlon distance, from Ironman to sprint races. At Challenge Roth 2011 he went for the first time sub 09:00hrs for Ironman distance and in 2010 he qualified for the Ironman World Championships at Kona, Hawaii. He is regularly placed inside the top 10 in Olympic/sprint competitions and in the past he has qualified for the Age Group World Champs for both New Zealand and Great Britain for the Olympic distance.   Whilst in New Zealand he also competed in the infamous Coast to Coast which has all the disciplines of triathlon plus a kayak!

Damo's vast triathlon experience and product knowledge provides the backbone to the shop's specialism in triathlon. He will be able to offer sound advice on all aspects of triathlon be it the right bike for you, to which wetsuit fits correctly. He is a qualified Level 3 British Triathlon Federation coach and works with a number of athletes with varying goals, from those just starting out in triathlon, to others wanting to qualify for Kona.

With the main bulk of bike maintenance and servicing done by Damion, you can be confident that the upmost care will be taken as he knows the importance of having your "pride and joy" in top condition for the next race.

Dave Garner – Assistant Manager, Level 2 Tri and Swim Smooth Coach

Dave works part time during the week with Damo. For the last 10 years he has been competing in triathlon at sprint to Half Ironman Distance.  In 2005 he was the Age Group European champion in his age category and has a number of national medals, usually placing in the top 10 of most races.

After completing his Level 2 BTF coaching award in 2007 he has been coaching regularly in the BRAT club, one of the country’s largest triathlon clubs. Racing at a high level himself and working with other triathletes has given him the opportunity to find how to really get the best performance possible out of racing.

Russ Hall - Saturday Staff, Triathlon, Running & Swim Smooth Coach

Russ has been a runner and cyclist since he was 12 years old, competing in mountain bike races at a national level from the age of 14 before turning to duathlon in 2006 and eventually triathlon in 2009. Russ has competed in all distances for both duathlon and triathlon. His first triathlon was Ironman Switzerland, since then representing the GB age group team at the World Duathlon and Triathlon Championships.

Russ can't remember a time when he hasn't been around bikes of one kind or another, and has worked in a bike shop as part time staff all of his life. As a professional mechanical engineer through the week, he has a technical edge to his bike knowledge that is difficult to match. Russ has taken his coaching down a different route and is a level 1 BTF coach but also a British Cycling Level 2 coach, a Level 2 Running coach and Swim Smooth coach. Working with a number of different tri clubs and individuals has given him the chance to use these skills.

Lydia Gurley - Saturday Staff

Lydia works part-time in the shop and has participated in triathlons of all distances for 4 years. Originally from Ireland, she has spent a considerable amount of time in British Columbia, Canada where she first developed her love of triathlon and particularly anything bike related. After completing Ironman Canada in 2010 and 2011 she moved to Birmingham to attend university. Since arriving she can most likely be found on one of her bikes competing in events such as cyclo-cross, road and criterium racing. In addition she, for some reason completely unknown to Damo, chooses to load her touring bike with “excessive”, “un-aerodynamic” weight traveling long distances from Canada to Mexico in 2012 and from Barcelona to Alpe d‘Huez in 2013.  In addition any challenge where one has to ask “why on earth would you do that?” such as the Paris-Roubaix Sportive, Three Peak Challenge or Tough Guy tends to be right up her alley.

Niall Harris – Apprentice and soon-to-be Cytech qualified bike technician

Not only is he new to the shop but he is also fairly new to cycling though is already impressing with his ability. Probably weighing around 10 stone wet through and riding a Cervélo R5 means he goes up hills with ease, as Damo can verify!
